Those who are anti-drug screening say that urine test is invasive and can be used to check for the pregnancy details of the person as well as the presence of prescription drugs that could show a medical problem. An employer can discover private medical details of a job applicant. One case where this is possible is where the employer wants to verify that the woman seeking a job is not pregnant as this could mean the woman will have to spend the time out of a job after giving birth. Some kinds of drug screening show drug use in the recent past. A urine test is a perfect example of this as it can show drug consumption within the past week. For those who are heavy drug users, a urine test can reveal usage of drug which occurred a month or a couple of months ago.

Drug screening methods are also available that show drug usage over an extended period. A good example in this category is the hair test. This tests are bit costly than the urine tests but are the best way of telling when the drug usage happened and whether it is still ongoing. Some drugs such as heroin, codeine, and morphine adhere to the hair, and laboratory analysts can tell when these compounds were last consumed based on the hair growth of the shaft. Hair tests cannot be used to establish drug use that has occurred in a week. A hair test is not the way to establish if an employee used cocaine before coming to work.

Saliva test is the other drug screening test that is gaining popularity in this area. It is more costly than the urine tests but cheaper compared to the blood tests. Saliva tests are used to identify if a person has used drugs in the past few days and thus very essential if you want to know if the person has recently used the drug. Methamphetamine and opiates are the drugs easily found using saliva tests.
